Who gets it

You qualify if you've worked for the employer on at least 30 days in the 12 months before the holiday and you don't miss your last scheduled shift before or first one after it without the employer's consent.

Holiday pay

If the holiday falls on a regular day of work and you have the day off, you get your average daily wage. If it isn't a regular day of work and you don't work, there's no holiday pay.

If you work that day

On a regular day of work, the employer either pays 1.5 times your wage for hours worked plus your average daily wage, or pays your regular wage and gives you a future day off with your average daily wage. If it isn't a regular day of work, you're paid 1.5 times for the hours worked.

Federally regulated workers

New Year's Day is one of the 10 general holidays under the Canada Labour Code, so employees of federally regulated employers, such as banks and Canada Post, get it everywhere in Canada, including provinces where it isn't a provincial holiday. Holiday pay is at least 1/20 of wages (not counting overtime) earned in the 4 weeks before the week of the holiday, and employees who work it get at least 1.5 times their regular rate plus holiday pay.

Store closing rules

2027No closing law

It isn't a retail closing day in Alberta, so stores may open and set their own hours.
